Tinubu orders fast-track of free healthcare, pension increase for retirees

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing the initiative as essential to social protection and preserving dignity in retirement.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga said the President also ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and the enforcement of a minimum pension guarantee to support vulnerable retirees under the scheme.

The directives followed a briefing by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, who also presented plans to address the lingering police pension issue. President Tinubu stressed that security personnel who serve the country must retire with dignity and peace of mind.

During the briefing, the PenCom DG updated the President on strategies to safeguard pension fund value amid inflationary pressures and outlined upcoming reforms, including foreign currency-denominated contributions to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the CPS.

President Tinubu expressed full support for the proposed reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and robust social security systems.
