NHRC urges rights-based strategy for youth empowerment

As Nigeria marks the 2025 International Youth Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for a comprehensive rights-based approach to youth empowerment, focusing on tackling unemployment, improving access to quality healthcare and education, and preparing young people for leadership roles.

In a statement issued by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Commission stressed the need to strengthen protection efforts for the younger population, expand their economic opportunities, and ensure their active participation at all levels of governance.

Dr. Ojukwu described Nigerian youth as “deep thinkers, active innovators, mobilizers, and partners in shaping a future anchored on equity, dignity, and respect for human rights,” adding that they should not be seen merely as beneficiaries of development but as key drivers of national progress.

While acknowledging the resilience and potential of young Nigerians, he noted persistent challenges, including high unemployment, underemployment, limited access to quality education, inadequate leadership mentorship, and economic pressures such as the rising cost of living. He also highlighted gaps in youth-friendly health services, particularly mental health and reproductive care, which remain scarce in rural and vulnerable communities.

Ojukwu urged government and stakeholders to invest in the aspirations of young people to enable them to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and national development.

International Youth Day is celebrated globally on August 12 each year.
