IGP urges traditional rulers on grassroots, intelligence-led policing

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has called on traditional rulers across the country to strengthen their collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force in fostering inclusivity, grassroots engagement, and intelligence-led policing.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun made the call on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, when he received a high-powered delegation of monarchs led by the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, and his wife at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. The meeting was also attended by the Ataoja of Osogbo, the Olu of Ilaro, the Oloro of Oro, the Olusin of Ijora Isin, Prince Akeem Adeyemi (a member of the House of Representatives), other federal lawmakers, and the Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police for the South-West geopolitical zone, DIG Adebowale Williams.

Addressing the royal fathers, the IGP emphasized the indispensable role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace, security, and stability at the community level. He said their proximity to the grassroots places them in a unique position to provide valuable intelligence, mediate disputes, and mobilize public support for law enforcement efforts. He assured them of robust collaboration between the Police and traditional authorities to strengthen community policing structures and promote sustainable peace and development.

In a separate engagement, Egbetokun hosted the Ambassador Designate of the Republic of Poland, His Excellency Michal Cygan, accompanied by senior officials of W-B Group, a leading security solutions provider in Poland. Discussions focused on deploying an integrated communication platform for the Nigeria Police Force to enhance ICT capabilities, streamline operational coordination, and improve response to crime and emergency situations.

The IGP described the planned upgrade as part of his broader agenda to build a Police Force that is technologically driven, intelligence-led, proactive, and rule-of-law compliant. He reaffirmed his leadership’s commitment to forging partnerships with both local and international stakeholders, noting that collaboration remains a critical pillar in combating emerging security threats.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the meeting with traditional rulers and the Polish delegation underscores the IGP’s twin focus on leveraging community structures and modern technology to achieve a safer, more secure Nigeria.
