The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has sounded an urgent flood warning for Jimeta, Adamawa State, following a significant rise in water levels at Bakin Kogi. As of Wednesday, 13th August 2025, readings show the river level has exceeded the warning threshold of 6.0 metres, with upstream discharge rates soaring above 3,222 cubic metres per second.
Officials warn that these conditions present a serious threat of overbank flooding, particularly in low-lying neighbourhoods of Jimeta and other surrounding flood-prone communities. The agency cautioned that if current flow rates persist, the volume of water could overwhelm embankments and drainage systems, triggering widespread inundation.
In response, the NEMA Yola Operations Office has activated its emergency coordination framework, working in collaboration with Disaster Response Units (DRUs), local authorities, and humanitarian partners to implement preparedness measures. This includes pre-positioning relief supplies, mobilising evacuation teams, and identifying safe shelters for affected residents.

Already, some displaced persons have sought refuge at designated emergency shelters in Limawa and Gwadabawa Secondary Schools. Officials are providing temporary accommodation, food, and basic medical support to those impacted.
NEMA has strongly advised residents in high-risk areas to remain on heightened alert, monitor official updates, and comply promptly with evacuation directives if issued. The agency emphasised that early relocation is key to avoiding loss of lives and property.
According to hydrological experts, the rise in water levels is linked to sustained heavy rainfall across upstream catchment areas and controlled releases from dams, which have combined to create intense downstream flow pressure. Continuous monitoring of the river basin will determine the next phase of response operations.
Authorities are also appealing to community leaders, religious institutions, and local media to help amplify safety messages and ensure timely dissemination of information to vulnerable populations.
