IGP orders review of Amnesty report on South-East

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed a comprehensive institutional review of Amnesty International’s 128-page report titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria.”

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the report alleges a pattern of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in the region. In response, the IGP has tasked relevant departments and field formations to conduct a detailed line-by-line assessment, cross-referencing the allegations with operational records, intelligence, and situation reports.

While reaffirming the Force’s commitment to protecting human rights, the IGP noted that past Amnesty International reports have contained inaccuracies and generalisations. He stressed that the review would be guided by verifiable evidence and institutional integrity.

Upon conclusion, the Police will issue an evidence-based response addressing specific allegations. The IGP also reiterated ongoing reforms, including strengthened accountability mechanisms, enhanced human rights training, and alignment with global policing standards.

The Force remains open to constructive engagement with civil society, human rights institutions, international partners, and the National Human Rights Commission, urging stakeholders to approach security issues with objectivity and balance.
