Okpebholo summons contractors over delay on Benin-Sapele road

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has summoned contractors handling the Benin-Sapele road project to explain the slow pace of work despite receiving financial mobilization from the state government.

According to his Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, the governor, who expressed displeasure during an inspection of the over 20-kilometre stretch on Sunday evening, warned that contractors could face sanctions if delays persist. He stopped at several points along the road to inspect the quality of drains, pavements, and materials used in the construction.

Okpebholo, accompanied by his entourage, also experienced the traffic gridlock along the route, where motorists hailed the ongoing collaboration between the Edo State Government and the Federal Government to rehabilitate the busy road.

Speaking after the inspection, the governor said his administration was determined to ease the suffering of residents and restore economic activities in the area by ensuring timely completion of the project.

“I have inspected what they are doing and the work is solid, but the speed is not acceptable. People are suffering because of the slow progress, and we must take drastic action to make the road motorable,” he stated.

The governor also questioned aspects of the drainage design, stressing the need for adjustments to address flooding concerns. He noted that while a second seven-kilometre segment would soon commence, a proper drainage system was essential for the road’s durability.

“Our people are suffering and crying, and we are out here to ensure speedy completion,” Okpebholo added.
