Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to immediately end what it described as the relentless harassment, intimidation, and persecution of human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.
The rights group said Sowore is facing “trumped-up” charges, including alleged terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraud, instituted by the office of the Inspector General of Police. His latest arraignment, Amnesty noted, reflects a wider crackdown on civic space and peaceful dissent in Nigeria.
Amnesty also condemned the investigation of bank accounts linked to Sowore and Sahara Reporters, describing it as a targeted attack on press freedom. The group urged authorities to drop all politically motivated charges, investigate allegations of torture and ill-treatment while in police custody, and hold those responsible accountable.
Sowore, declared an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience in 2019, has faced repeated arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, and what rights groups call sham trials, all linked to his peaceful activism for human rights, social justice, and the rule of law.
