Don commends HURIWA for backing Supreme Court ruling on Warri constituency

A university don, Prof. Ben Binebai of Niger Delta University, has praised the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) for supporting the enforcement of a Supreme Court ruling on electoral ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency, Delta State.

The professor of Theatre Arts commended HURIWA for condemning the alleged refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the December 2, 2022 judgment, which ordered a fresh delineation of wards and polling units in Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North Local Government Areas.

Binebai described the ruling as a “landmark judgment” that offered long-awaited relief to the marginalised Ijaw and Urhobo communities, who, he said, had faced years of electoral irregularities and underrepresentation.

He argued that INEC’s failure to comply undermines both the rule of law and Nigeria’s democratic integrity, stressing that any electoral process conducted in Warri without the delineation would be “null and void.”

“HURIWA’s stance demonstrates an unwavering commitment to justice and fairness,” Binebai stated, urging the Commission and the Federal Government to respect the Supreme Court’s directive and guarantee fair representation for all communities in the constituency.
