Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has intensified oversight of ongoing road projects across the state, insisting that contractors deliver durable infrastructure that reflects value for taxpayers’ money.
According to Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Edo State Fred Itua said on August 31, 2024, the Governor embarked on an extensive inspection tour following his return from Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area. Projects visited included the 9.3km Illeh–Ukhun Road in Esan West, which is nearing completion with drainage systems installed, asphalt laid on sections, and stone base prepared for final surfacing.
Governor Okpebholo also inspected the busy Moscow Junction corridor along Sapele Road in Benin City, trekking nearly three kilometres through Moscow, Limit, PZ, Agip, Okabere, Winners, and Peanut Junction before ending at the Old Road. The assessment focused on drainage, materials used, and road foundation strength. Residents and traders along the route applauded the Governor’s intervention in rehabilitating the long-neglected stretch.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve to enforce accountability, Okpebholo recalled that two weeks earlier, he had threatened to revoke contracts on the Oghehe and Old Road projects over substandard work but noted visible improvements since then.
“My concern is to ensure Edo people get value for their money and that these projects are completed promptly to ease the gridlock that has tormented commuters for years,” he said.
The Governor noted progress in speed and quality, stressing that his administration would continue to monitor contractors closely. He emphasized that road construction remains central to his SHINE Agenda, aimed at opening up communities, easing mobility, and boosting economic activity.
The project contractor, Engr. Ubani Stanley, admitted that the Governor’s stern stance spurred improvements. “We took his warning seriously, and today, he has seen the results. We are committed to delivering the projects on schedule,” he said.
