PEP donates books to boost Chinese language, cultural exchange in Nigeria

The People’s Education Press (PEP) has donated 15 sets of Chinese language and cultural teaching materials to Nigeria’s Chinese Corner initiative, aimed at deepening mutual understanding and strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.

The donation was presented on Thursday in Abuja, where Counselor Yang Jianxing of the Chinese Embassy described the gesture as a reflection of the “friendly bond between China and Nigeria.” He noted that the high-quality textbooks would help Nigerian students learn Mandarin more effectively while appreciating Chinese culture.

Launched in 2013, the Chinese Corner project currently operates 13 centres across Nigeria, with plans to open two more. It provides Nigerian high school students opportunities to study Mandarin and explore Chinese traditions, with many participants later joining Confucius Institutes or contributing to China-Nigeria cooperation projects.

Counselor Yang praised PEP’s support, describing the materials as “seeds of friendship” that would grow into stronger ties between Nigerian and Chinese youth. He also highlighted plans ahead of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, including the development of tailored Chinese language materials and possible China-Nigeria educational TV programmes.

Dr. Muhammed Sani Ladan, Secretary of the FCT Secondary Education Board, commended the donation as a product of sustained collaboration with PEP, recalling that a recent visit by PEP executives from Beijing paved the way for the initiative. He described the books as tools of empowerment and long-term knowledge transfer, affirming Nigeria’s commitment to stronger cultural and educational cooperation.
