Army probes soldier over alleged assault in Calabar

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a soldier allegedly assaulting a civilian near Eburutu Barracks, Calabar, on Wednesday, September 18, 2025.

In a statement issued by Major Yemi Sokoya, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade, the Army described the incident as “unacceptable” and contrary to its professional ethics and rules of engagement.

Preliminary findings revealed the identity of the soldier, who is now in custody pending a formal inquiry. The Army assured that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in line with military law.

“The Nigerian Army views this incident with utmost seriousness and expresses deep regret over the distress it has caused the victim, their family, and members of the public,” the statement read.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of citizens while calling on residents of Cross River State to remain supportive in maintaining peace and security.
