The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun made a poignant visit to the National Trauma Centre, National Hospital in Abuja today. His mission was to personally assess the condition of Police Inspector Omeje Matthew, who had fallen victim to a brutal attack by armed hoodlums at his Kabusa residence in the nation’s capital.
In an official statement Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the IGP conveyed his deep concern for Inspector Matthew and others who have suffered similar fates. The visit underscores the IGP’s determination to address the safety and security of law enforcement officers both on and off duty.
Egbetokun did not mince words in condemning attacks on police personnel. He asserted that such assaults are not just directed at individual officers but pose a threat to the entire law enforcement community and the overall peace and security of society. With firm resolve, he issued a stern warning that perpetrators of such attacks would face the full weight of the law.
In the wake of this incident, the IGP has issued a directive to the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to launch a comprehensive investigation. The aim is to swiftly apprehend the culprits responsible for this reprehensible attack and ensure that justice is served.
The Inspector General of Police took the opportunity to call upon Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders across the country to prioritize the resolution of pending investigations into attacks on police officers within their respective jurisdictions. This emphasis on justice and accountability reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protect its own and maintain public trust.
As he wished Inspector Matthew and others in similar circumstances a speedy recovery, Dr. Egbetokun assured them and their families of the full support and assistance of the Nigeria Police Force.
