Nigerian Army begins disciplinary action against soldier over driver’s death

Headquarters 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army has commenced disciplinary action against a soldier involved in the unfortunate death of a commercial bus driver at Akunu, Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State. The Brigade has assured the family of the deceased of swift justice and full accountability.

According to a statement issued by Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, the incident occurred on Sunday, 13 October 2025, when the commercial driver, en route from Akure to Abuja, encountered mechanical problems near a military checkpoint at Akunu. During the delay, some passengers demanded a refund of their transport fare, prompting one of them to seek assistance from a soldier at the checkpoint.

The soldier, in an act described as unprofessional and contrary to the Army’s Rules of Engagement, engaged in an altercation with the driver, which escalated into physical contact. The driver sustained injuries during the incident.

Upon receiving reports of the occurrence, Headquarters 32 Artillery Brigade swiftly intervened, evacuated the victim to a medical facility, and took full responsibility for his medical treatment. Despite efforts to save his life at various hospitals, including the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, the driver sadly passed away on Monday, 14 October 2025.

Major Irabor emphasized that the Nigerian Army, as a disciplined and law-abiding institution, deeply regrets the incident and remains committed to ensuring justice. He disclosed that the implicated soldier is undergoing disciplinary procedures and will face the full consequences of his actions, with the outcome to be made public.

The Brigade has also paid condolence visits to the deceased’s family and the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State. In addition, the Army has pledged to cover the burial expenses and support the welfare of the deceased’s family, including measures to ensure the continued education of his children.

The Ondo State Government has commended the Brigade’s prompt response and commitment to resolving the matter amicably while assuring continued support to the bereaved family.
