Amnesty International has strongly condemned the latest bandit attack on Layin Danauta in Kuyello District, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where at least 13 people, including children, were killed.
According to the human rights organisation, preliminary findings revealed that the armed assailants stormed the community around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, unleashing a wave of violence that left several residents dead, properties destroyed, and shops looted.
“The pattern of the latest attack bears all the hallmarks of the repeated atrocities that have plagued Birnin Gwari over the years,” Amnesty International said in a statement.
The group decried the alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom, and frequent killings across Birnin Gwari, noting that residents now live in constant fear due to the authorities’ failure to protect lives and property.
“The incessant killings and the authorities’ stunning failure to end them and bring perpetrators to justice continue to pose a grave threat to the right to life in Nigeria,” the statement added.
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to take decisive steps to end the violence in Birnin Gwari and ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
