Army clarifies shooting incident near Ojo cantonment

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has clarified reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen shot and killed a civilian within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.

In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Division explained that the incident did not occur inside the Cantonment but at a junction near the Mammy Market abattoir gate on 18 October 2025.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting was linked to suspected cult-related activities, which tragically resulted in the death of one person identified as Rilwan Adekunle.

The Army noted that its standby team responded swiftly to a distress call and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre — the nearest medical facility — where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The 81 Division expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya urged members of the public and the media to verify information from appropriate authorities before dissemination to avoid spreading misinformation and causing unnecessary public anxiety.
