The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the recent declaration by the United States government designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and hinting at possible military action.
Obi described the development as a serious warning that should worry every well-meaning Nigerian, noting that the country is grappling with an “unprecedented level of insecurity” marked by widespread killings and destruction.
Citing Amnesty International’s report that over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023, Obi lamented what he called the “unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians,” stressing that such tragedies are avoidable under competent and responsible leadership.
“The terrible situation we face today is largely a result of the lack of competence, commitment, prudent management of resources, and patriotism within the APC-led government,” Obi stated. “Nigeria needs leaders who can govern effectively, unite the people, and ensure that peace, truth, and justice prevail.”
He emphasised that while insecurity predates the current administration, the government’s response has been inadequate, lacking the decisive action required to safeguard lives and property.
Obi also called for strengthened diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States, describing both countries as long-standing democratic partners committed to regional peace and stability.
“The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and other plausible engagements by both nations to address the prevailing and disturbing security concerns,” he said. “Nigeria and the U.S. must work together urgently and in good faith to restore peace and stability.”
