Amnesty International condemns alleged clampdown on Islamic cleric Masssuka

Amnesty International has raised alarm over what it describes as unlawful and sectarian efforts to silence Islamic cleric Malam Yahya Masssuka, who is widely regarded for his peaceful preaching and teachings.

In a statement, the organisation said attempts to use state powers to shut down Masssuka’s activities and close his schools, despite no evidence of legal violations, were unacceptable and posed a threat to fundamental freedoms. It warned that such actions reflect a broader pattern of intolerance aimed at suppressing dissenting religious views.

Amnesty International noted that Malam Masssuka is known for preaching against violent extremism and promoting dialogue, stressing that any targeting of him for expressing peaceful opinions amounts to an infringement of his rights.

The group reminded Nigerian authorities that freedom of religion, thought, and expression are guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights law, and must be upheld without discrimination.

It urged the government to safeguard the rights and personal safety of Malam Masssuka and all individuals, in full compliance with Nigeria’s human rights obligations.
