Amnesty International Nigeria has raised fresh alarm over escalating assaults on education in northern Nigeria, warning that schools, teachers and pupils continue to face grave danger amid persistent insecurity.
The organisation said hundreds of teachers, schoolchildren and students have been killed or injured by Boko Haram since 2012, while thousands of children have been abducted in a pattern of violence it described as “war crimes.” Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for multiple school attacks over the years, Amnesty noted, stressing that perpetrators must be held accountable for widespread human rights abuses.
“Education is under attack in northern Nigeria. Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life,” the group said.
Amnesty International added that many children have been forced to abandon their schooling after violent attacks displaced their families, while countless teachers have fled to other states for safety.
The organisation called on Nigerian authorities to take urgent and decisive action to secure learning environments, protect children, and safeguard the fundamental right to education.
