Police foil kidnap attempt in FCT, as one officer killed in gun duel

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Guto village, a community on the outskirts of Bwari Area Council, but lost an officer in the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

The incident occurred at about 1:10 a.m. on Thursday when the Command received a distress call that a group of about 30 armed men had invaded the community in an attempt to abduct a resident and his family.

Operatives from the Bwari Division’s Surveillance Team, supported by the IGP Special Intervention Squad (SIS), were swiftly deployed to the scene. The attackers reportedly opened fire upon sighting the police, prompting a fierce gun battle.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the officers engaged the attackers with superior firepower, neutralising two of the assailants while others escaped into nearby bushes and mountainous terrain.

During the confrontation, one police officer sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to Bwari General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. The Command described his death as a tragic loss, noting that he “paid the supreme price in the line of duty.”

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, has deployed additional personnel to the community to prevent further incursions and restore calm. He also ordered a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators are tracked down and brought to justice.
