Group raises alarm over insecurity, governance failures in Benue

The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEHUR) has voiced strong concerns over what it describes as deteriorating security conditions and governance lapses in Benue State under the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

In a statement delivered in Abuja by Comrade Adebayo Lion Ogory, the organisation cited a surge in violent attacks across communities, particularly in Turan (Kwande LGA), Logo, Gwer West and Agatu. CEDEHUR said assaults by armed herdsmen have led to multiple deaths, widespread displacement and severe disruption of farming activities, a critical pillar of the state’s economy.

The group also alleged serious administrative irregularities within key state agencies, including the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Bureau for Quality Assurance and Examination Board, Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) and the Bureau of Solid Minerals. Reported issues include questionable contract awards, diversion of funds and general institutional inefficiency.

CEDEHUR further raised alarm over ongoing illegal mining in protected areas allegedly involving foreign operators. The group said the state government’s failure to intervene has emboldened such activities, pointing to the reported killing of two young men in Turan last weekend following disputes linked to mining operations.

The organisation also criticised alleged directives from Governor Alia restricting public gatherings without prior approval, warning that such measures could erode fundamental democratic freedoms. CEDEHUR called on APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, to clarify the party’s stance on the matter.

To address the growing concerns, CEDEHUR urged federal agencies—the DSS, EFCC, ICPC and the Nigeria Police—to probe claims of financial mismanagement, human rights violations and security breaches across the state.

The group also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convene a meeting with Benue stakeholders to tackle what it described as an escalating crisis. It called for an immediate halt to illegal mining and an end to political thuggery.

CEDEHUR warned that without urgent and coordinated intervention, the situation in Benue State could further deteriorate, posing increased risks to lives, livelihoods and public trust in government institutions.
