Troops arrests two criminal herders in Makurdi as harvest protection intensifies

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing onto community farmlands and destroying crops during a routine patrol in Makurdi, Benue State, as part of intensified efforts to protect farmers during the harvest season.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu of HQ JTF Operation Whirl Stroke, the incident occurred on 20 November 2025 when OPWS personnel deployed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands, causing significant crop damage. The swift response by the troops prevented further destruction and a potential clash between the herders and local farmers.

The two suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation, with legal action expected to follow.

Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands when disputes arise. He warned that retaliatory actions only heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.

Major General Gara further appealed to herders to conduct their activities lawfully, emphasising that criminal behaviours that threaten security and harmony will not be tolerated.

He reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to safeguarding farmlands and ensuring a secure environment for legitimate economic activities across the region.
