The Nigerian Senate has taken decisive action to investigate reports of unlawful killings and imprisonment of approximately 250 Nigerian citizens in Ethiopia. The Senate directed its committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to collaborate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in conducting a thorough inquiry into these disturbing allegations. They have been given a two-week deadline to complete their investigation and report back to the Senate.
The resolution to launch this investigation followed a motion presented during Wednesday’s plenary session by Senate Minority Leader, Simon Mwadkwon. Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) co-sponsored the motion, which was titled “Urgent Need to Investigate the Unlawful Killings and Incarceration of over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia.”
Senator Mwadkwon, in presenting the motion, expressed his concern over the reported inhuman treatment of Nigerians in Ethiopia without any evidence of criminal activity. He stated that there is no documentation of court proceedings outlining the alleged crimes committed by these individuals or any court convictions against them.
Mwadkwon emphasized that the sovereignty of Nigeria and the sanctity of the lives and property of its citizens, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, should be respected and upheld. He also highlighted that, despite the economic and social hardships Nigerians face, it is unacceptable that approximately 250 Nigerians are subjected to such degrading treatment.
In his support for the motion, Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno) stressed that the primary duty of any government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. He emphasized the importance of all branches of government, including the executive and legislative arms, coming together to investigate and address this concerning situation.
Senator Titus Zam (APC-Benue) emphasized the importance of protecting Nigerians worldwide and urged the Nigerian embassy to take immediate action to resolve this matter while safeguarding the lives of its citizens.
Similarly, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi) emphasized the need for Nigeria to uphold its commitment to Africa in its foreign policy and protect its citizens wherever they are. He also called on Nigerians to refrain from engaging in criminal activities, whether at home or abroad.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, urged relevant authorities of the Federal Government to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians, both within the country and in the diaspora. He expressed awareness of discrimination faced by Nigerians in other countries and called for a serious response to such challenges.
The Senate’s decision to investigate the alleged killings and incarceration in Ethiopia reflects its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens both at home and abroad. The findings of this investigation are eagerly awaited as Nigerians hope for a swift resolution to this distressing situation.
