NAF boosts national development with space research lab, education projects in Kwara

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deepened its support for national development and civil–military cooperation with the commissioning of a series of Special Intervention Projects (SIP) across Kwara State, including a state-of-the-art space research laboratory and upgraded educational facilities.

The projects, initiated by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and facilitated by Air Vice Marshal Lanre Ibrahim Oluwatoyin (rtd), underscore the NAF’s commitment to advancing education, research, and community welfare as strategic pillars of national security.

Delivered in two clusters, the interventions include the establishment of an Advanced Space Composite Laboratory (ASCO LAB) at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and major educational infrastructure upgrades at JNI College (JNIC), Babanloma.

The ASCO LAB, commissioned on 25 November 2025, was developed in partnership with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). Equipped for cutting-edge space science and composite materials research, it positions UNILORIN as a hub for aerospace innovation. The project also includes a newly constructed 700-metre access road to improve mobility within the area.

The second cluster, unveiled on 26 November 2025 in Babanloma, focuses on foundational education. NAF constructed and fully furnished a modern nursery and primary school complex, upgraded the digital learning centre with ICT tools powered by solar energy, and renovated the NYSC Corpers’ Lodge to improve the welfare of serving youth corps members.

Representing the CAS during the commissioning ceremonies, the Chief of Civil-Military Relations (CCMR), Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, said the projects reflect the NAF’s expanding investment in non-kinetic operations aimed at building trust and strengthening partnerships with communities.

AVM Lanre Ibrahim Oluwatoyin (rtd) expressed gratitude for the opportunity to facilitate the interventions, praising the CAS and stakeholders for ensuring high-quality and timely delivery.

Community leaders and beneficiaries hailed the projects as transformative, noting their long-term impact on education, innovation, and local development. The CCMR reaffirmed that sustaining such initiatives in honour of deserving senior officers nationwide will continue to advance national development and enhance civil–military cooperation.
