The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Tuesday commenced the Federal Government–approved 50 per cent discount on train fares nationwide, recording a strong passenger turnout across major rail corridors as Nigerians travelled for the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The discounted Yuletide train service, which runs from December 23, 2025 to January 4, 2026, witnessed heavy patronage at key stations along the Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna standard gauge routes, as well as major narrow gauge corridors. Several train services operated near full capacity, reflecting strong public response to the fare reduction initiative.
Passengers at the stations expressed appreciation for the discount, describing it as timely and financially relieving, particularly for families and group travellers seeking to reunite with loved ones during the festive season.
The NRC said the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reducing transportation costs, promoting inclusive mobility, and encouraging greater use of rail transport as a safe and reliable option during peak travel periods.
Speaking on the commencement of the programme, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, assured passengers of the Corporation’s readiness to deliver safe, efficient and customer-focused services throughout the Yuletide period.
He added that both standard gauge and narrow gauge services are fully operational, with enhanced security, safety and customer service measures in place across stations and onboard trains to manage the anticipated increase in passenger traffic.
The NRC advised passengers on standard gauge routes to continue using its approved online booking platforms, while those travelling on narrow gauge services were urged to purchase tickets directly at designated railway stations.
The Corporation reiterated its commitment to seamless festive operations and called on passengers to cooperate with railway officials and adhere to travel guidelines to ensure smooth journeys during the discounted Yuletide train service.
