Tambuwal appeals for calm after FG–US airstrike in Sokoto

Distinguished Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has urged residents of Sokoto State to remain calm following reports of an airstrike conducted as part of ongoing counterterrorism operations in the state.

In a statement issued via his official X handle, the former governor disclosed that the operation was carried out through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States. He called on members of the public to remain law-abiding while security authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the strike.

Senator Tambuwal said he is in active engagement with relevant security agencies to obtain comprehensive details of the operation and to ensure that all necessary safeguards were observed. He assured constituents, particularly in Sokoto South Senatorial District, that their safety and wellbeing remain a priority.

He emphasised that counterterrorism operations are strictly targeted at criminal and terrorist elements threatening public safety, and not at innocent civilians, who he described as victims of insecurity. According to him, the protection of civilian lives remains central to all legitimate security actions.

The senator also commended the professionalism and bravery of Nigeria’s military and security forces, noting their sustained sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and banditry, often in collaboration with international partners under challenging conditions.

He further appealed to community leaders, traditional institutions and residents to support security efforts by providing credible information and resisting misinformation capable of fuelling fear or tension.

Tambuwal stressed that unity, vigilance and cooperation with lawful security operations are critical to defeating terrorism and achieving lasting peace in Sokoto State and across the country.
