Former Vice President Peter Obi has called for urgent national unity and transformative leadership, urging Nigerians to embrace a “New Nigeria” grounded in integrity, inclusivity, and socio-economic development.
Obi made the remarks at a high-profile gathering in Enugu attended by former governors Okwesili Nwodo (Enugu), Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), alongside senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji. Prominent political figures, academics, community leaders, and members of the Federal and State Houses of Assembly were also present. Distinguished guests from outside the Igbo community included ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, and former Edo State Governor Senator Oserheimen Osunbor.
In his address, Obi condemned systemic corruption, impunity, and mismanagement, which he said have hindered Nigeria’s development. “Our tragedy is not a lack of potential; we are rich in human and natural resources. The problem is deliberate sabotage by a political class that exploits the country and its people,” he stated, adding that the nation has been “looted into poverty” and that the current system rewards mediocrity while punishing merit.
Obi outlined a vision for national renewal, highlighting the importance of unity, effective leadership, and the revitalization of agriculture and manufacturing as key drivers of economic growth. He called for the dismantling of structures that perpetuate corruption, insecurity, unemployment, inflation, and illiteracy, urging Nigerians to act decisively for the benefit of future generations.
He also announced the formation of a broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Senator David Mark, designed to unite citizens, political parties, and movements committed to transparency, patriotism, and national development.
“This is a time for unity and national renewal. Together, with courage, unity, and resolve, we can build a new, productive, and inclusive Nigeria,” Obi said, emphasizing that achieving a New Nigeria is possible through honest, responsive, and visionary leadership.
