The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, pairing him with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on its presidential ticket.
The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who said Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to Abdullahi, the decision was influenced by Amaechi’s performance in the party’s presidential primaries, where he emerged as runner-up, as well as his extensive record of public service at both state and federal levels.
The ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as a “unity and rescue ticket,” saying it brings together two experienced political figures with the capacity to address Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
In a statement issued by the party, the ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political career, which includes serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation. The party noted that his experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen the ticket and support the delivery of its policy agenda.
“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government,” the statement said, adding that Amaechi’s background would be an asset to a future ADC administration.
The party further stated that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria, coupled with his reputation as a reform-oriented administrator, would enhance the ticket’s national appeal and strengthen efforts to build broad political coalitions ahead of the 2027 polls.
The ADC said the combination of Atiku and Amaechi represents a national platform capable of bridging regional, generational and political divides, while offering voters an alternative vision for governance, economic recovery, job creation and national unity.
The party expressed confidence that the ticket would galvanise support among Nigerians and energise its growing coalition as preparations intensify for the next presidential election.
ADC leaders also called on party members, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and other stakeholders to support what they described as a renewed effort to build a stronger, safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
