The Delta State Police Command has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse Division, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, and directed the X-Squad to investigate allegations of a ₦2.5 million extortion involving officers of the division.
The directive followed a viral video in which a woman alleged that the DPO, alongside two officers identified as Bright and Usman, extorted the sum of ₦2.5 million from her with the promise of securing the release of her brother, who is currently in police custody.
In a statement issued by the Command and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Edafe Bright, the police explained that the incident originated on January 1, 2026, when the youth leader of Jesse community arrested some suspects and handed them over to the police. Among those arrested was the complainant’s younger brother, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, aged 20. His arrest, according to the police, was based on the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who allegedly stated that he sold a firearm to Onojeruo.
The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation. However, in response to the extortion allegations against the DPO and two other officers of Jesse Division, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, ordered immediate action.
According to the Command, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad has been mandated to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. The officer identified as Constable Bright in the video has been detained at the Command Headquarters, while the DPO has been removed from his position and redeployed to the headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation. The redeployment, the police said, followed a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct previously made against the DPO from various quarters.
CP Adesola assured members of the public that any officer found culpable after the investigation would be dealt with decisively in line with the Police Act and extant regulations, to serve as a deterrent to others.
He further emphasised that the Command would not tolerate extortion, intimidation, incivility or any form of unprofessional conduct by its officers, urging members of the public to report misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit via the phone numbers: 09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018 and 09066575187.
