The Rivers State House of Assembly has said the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is progressing in accordance with constitutional provisions.
In a statement issued on January 9, 2026 and was signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Dr. Enemi Alabo George, the Assembly disclosed that the process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, is being conducted in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). The House confirmed that the two notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor and Deputy Governor have been formally transmitted to them by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, and that their responses are being awaited.
The Assembly reiterated that it is constitutionally empowered to act on behalf of the people to check infractions of the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other state official, adding that it remains duty bound to discharge this responsibility.
Reacting to reports suggesting that the impeachment process has been halted or discontinued, the House dismissed such claims as false and misleading. It accused certain individuals and media platforms of spreading misinformation aimed at causing disaffection between the legislature and the public.
With the approval of the Speaker, the Assembly called on the public to disregard what it described as “false narratives,” insisting that the process remains on course and that the House would not be deterred by intimidation, blackmail, or threats.
The Assembly expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their support and prayers, and also thanked stakeholders and leaders across various levels for their encouragement. It further extended goodwill to democrats committed to the Nigerian project.
