The House of Representatives has joined Nigerians in honouring the officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their courage, professionalism and sacrifice, while solemnly remembering those who have paid the supreme price in defence of the nation’s peace, unity and sovereignty.
In a statement signed by the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the House praised the gallantry, discipline and unwavering dedication of military personnel whose efforts continue to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity and preserve the freedoms enjoyed by its citizens.
The House noted that the Armed Forces’ sustained operations against terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminal violence, as well as their support to sister security agencies nationwide, remain vital to national stability and security.
It also commended serving personnel across all theatres of operation for their resilience under challenging and often dangerous conditions, while acknowledging the sacrifices made by their families, who share in the demands and risks of national service.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Rep. Babajimi Benson, welcomed the Federal Government’s redesignation of the annual event as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. He said the new designation appropriately balances the remembrance of fallen heroes with the celebration of the bravery, professionalism and patriotism of serving military personnel.
“This balanced recognition affirms that national remembrance must go hand in hand with appreciation for those who continue to stand watch in defence of Nigeria’s peace, security and sovereignty,” Benson said.
The House of Representatives reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies, legislation and oversight initiatives aimed at strengthening the welfare, operational capacity and professionalism of the Armed Forces, in pursuit of a more secure and peaceful Nigeria.
The statement concluded with a call for national unity and collective responsibility, praying for the repose of the souls of fallen heroes and for their service to continue to inspire civic duty across the country.
