The Edo State Police Command has issued a stern warning to motorists and members of the public, declaring that any attack on police officers on lawful duty will be met with decisive action.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command recalled its public advisory of December 24, 2025, in which it urged motorists to slow down at police checkpoints and cooperate with officers by submitting to lawful enquiries in the interest of public safety. The Police stressed that there is no justifiable reason for any driver to speed through a checkpoint, except with the intent to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.
The warning follows a recent incident at the Iyekogba Estate Gate in Benin City, where a reckless driver reportedly drove against traffic, breached a police checkpoint barricade, and deliberately turned back towards officers on duty. In the process, three police personnel were knocked down while performing lawful duties. The suspect subsequently crashed into multiple vehicles before being restrained and arrested. The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Nsikak Okon (male), aged 19, who was found to be an unlicensed driver. A black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued at approximately ₦28 million, was recovered from him. The vehicle, which had reportedly been in use since May 2024, was discovered to be unregistered. Items recovered from the suspect included a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid believed to be diluted refnol.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, emphasized that any individual who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared, stressing that “enough is enough.”
The Command reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to the maintenance of law and order and the protection of lives and property across the state.
