The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who passed away on January 15, describing him as a fearless advocate for religious tolerance and interfaith harmony.
In a statement, the US Mission noted that Imam Abdullahi was widely respected for his longstanding commitment to outreach across religious communities and his dedication to promoting peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
The Mission recalled that the United States Department of State formally honoured Imam Abdullahi with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award in recognition of his courageous actions in June 2018, when he helped save the lives of hundreds of Christians during attacks in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.
According to the statement, Imam Abdullahi’s compassion and humanity exemplified the values of interfaith coexistence and mutual respect, leaving a lasting impact on communities across the country.
The US Mission added that his legacy of peace, tolerance and acceptance would endure, continuing to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike, while reaffirming its solidarity with those mourning his passing.
