Outrage grows over denial of reported mass abductions in Kaduna

The denial by the Nigeria Police Force and the Kaduna State Government of reported mass abductions in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area, has sparked widespread concern, with critics warning that such responses risk eroding public trust and worsening the country’s persistent insecurity.

Observers and community stakeholders describe the denials as a disturbing trend that undermines accountability, perpetuates impunity, and fuels the cycle of abductions that has plagued parts of Kaduna State and the wider North-West region.

According to affected communities, the reported abductions were supported by eyewitness testimonies, documented lists of victims, and public statements from church and community leaders. Families of the alleged victims insist that their relatives were forcibly taken, leaving communities traumatised and desperate for official acknowledgment and intervention.

However, the police and the state government have repeatedly dismissed the reports, describing them as “fake news” or attributing them to political opposition. These assertions have drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups and local leaders, who argue that such blanket denials compound the suffering of victims’ families and hinder meaningful security responses.

Analysts warn that persistent denial in the face of credible accounts could deepen public distrust in state institutions and discourage communities from cooperating with security agencies. They further caution that acknowledging and transparently investigating such incidents is essential to restoring confidence and breaking the cycle of violence and abductions in the region.
