The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of civilians following reports alleging civilian casualties during an air operation conducted on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Kurigi Village, Kontokoro District of Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State.
In a statement Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said it had taken note of the reports and acknowledged the gravity of the alleged loss of lives and injuries. The Air Force expressed deep concern for all those affected, stressing that the protection of non-combatants remains central to its operational doctrine.
According to the NAF, it has over the past year consistently implemented its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP), which integrates civilian protection considerations into all phases of air operations. The statement noted that the framework also strengthens training, operational procedures and safeguards aimed at minimising harm to civilians.
In line with this policy, the NAF disclosed that it has activated a Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the reported incident in Kurigi.
The Air Force assured Nigerians that the investigation would be guided by the principles of accountability, responsibility and transparency. It pledged to take responsibility where required, introduce necessary corrective measures and strengthen safeguards to prevent a recurrence.
The statement added that the NAF remains resolute in its duty to defend the nation while operating with professionalism, restraint and respect for human life, in line with the trust reposed in it by the Nigerian people.
