Four killed in clash between Cuban border guards and Florida-registered boat

Four people were killed on Tuesday following an armed confrontation between Cuban border guards and a Florida-registered speedboat that allegedly entered Cuban territorial waters, in an incident that has heightened tensions between Cuba and the United States.

In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior said the incident occurred near Cayo Falcones, off the coast of Villa Clara province, when a patrol vessel from the Border Guard Troops intercepted the approaching boat. Authorities alleged that the vessel had crossed into Cuban waters and failed to comply with orders to identify itself.

According to the ministry, individuals aboard the speedboat opened fire on the Cuban patrol vessel, injuring its commanding officer. Border guards reportedly returned fire, resulting in a brief but intense exchange.

Cuban officials said four people aboard the speedboat were killed, while six others sustained injuries and were taken into custody. Authorities added that weapons, including rifles and other combat equipment, were recovered from the vessel.

Havana described the episode as an attempted armed infiltration and accused those involved of planning hostile actions on the island. In a separate statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country would not tolerate violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Officials further claimed that the individuals on board were Cuban nationals residing in the United States, although their identities have not yet been publicly disclosed.

In Washington, U.S. authorities acknowledged the reports but did not immediately endorse Cuba’s account. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said American officials would review the circumstances surrounding the incident and seek further details.

The confrontation comes amid strained relations between Havana and Washington, marked by longstanding disagreements over sanctions, migration and regional security issues. Analysts warn that the deadly exchange could further complicate diplomatic engagement and intensify rhetoric across the Florida Straits.

Investigations are ongoing in both countries as officials seek to determine the sequence of events and whether the vessel’s entry into Cuban waters was deliberate or part of a broader operation.
