Africa emerging global power, Putin tells leaders

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Africa is rapidly emerging as a major force in global affairs, reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to strengthening political, economic and strategic relations with countries across the continent ahead of the forthcoming Russia-Africa Summit.

In a message issued to African Heads of State and Government to commemorate Africa Day 2026, Putin praised the continent’s growing influence in international diplomacy and its increasing role in shaping a new global order founded on equality, mutual respect and international cooperation.

The Russian leader described Africa Day as a historic symbol of the continent’s victory over colonialism, noting that the occasion reflects the enduring struggle of African peoples for freedom, peace, dignity and prosperity.

According to him, African nations have continued to record significant progress in economic development, regional integration and social advancement despite prevailing global economic pressures and security challenges.

Putin stated that African countries are now playing increasingly important roles in resolving major international issues and promoting stability within their respective regions.

He also commended the African Union and various sub-regional organisations for deepening continental integration and strengthening collective mechanisms aimed at addressing conflicts and crises across Africa.

The Russian President stressed that Moscow highly values its longstanding relations with African states, insisting that Russia and Africa share common positions on the need for a fairer international system free from domination, discrimination and external interference.

“We are united by the desire to build a just multipolar world based on genuine equality and the supremacy of international law,” Putin stated.

His remarks come amid intensified diplomatic and economic engagement between Russia and African countries, as global powers continue to compete for strategic influence and partnerships across the continent.

Putin expressed confidence that the Third Russia-Africa Summit scheduled to hold in Moscow in October would further deepen cooperation in critical sectors such as trade, energy, security, education, technology and infrastructure development.

“I will be glad to welcome African leaders in Moscow,” he said while extending goodwill wishes to governments and citizens across Africa.

Observers say the message underscores Russia’s growing determination to consolidate its strategic presence in Africa and position itself as a key partner in the continent’s long-term development agenda.
