Multiple suicide bomb explosions rocked parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening, leaving several casualties and triggering heightened security across the Borno State capital.
In a statement Media Information Officer Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI Lieut. Col. Sani Uba said the attacks occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on March 16, 2026, during the Iftar period. Suspected Boko Haram insurgents detonated improvised explosive devices at three locations within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council—Post Office area, Monday Market axis and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Security authorities said the assailants targeted densely populated areas in an apparent attempt to inflict mass casualties and spread panic across the city.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and other security agencies, responded promptly by securing and cordoning off the affected sites to prevent further incidents.
Emergency response teams, including personnel of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and medical responders, evacuated victims to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
While rescue and evacuation efforts continue, preliminary findings suggest the attackers may have deployed multiple suicide bombers as part of a coordinated operation targeting crowded locations.
In response, security forces have intensified patrols, surveillance and counter-IED operations across the metropolis to track down suspects and avert further attacks.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible, and report any suspicious movements or unattended items to security agencies.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while pursuing those responsible for the attacks.
