Amnesty International condemns fresh Plateau killings, alleges security failures

Amnesty International has raised alarm over renewed violence in Plateau State, stating that recent attacks highlight what it describes as the failure of the Federal Government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adequately protect lives and property.

According to the organisation, three young men were ambushed and killed by gunmen on Friday, April 3, 2026, in Nyangom Gel, located in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident comes just days after a separate attack in Anguwan Rukuba, where at least 30 people were reportedly killed and dozens more injured.

Victims and survivors of the recent violence told Amnesty International that security personnel were largely absent during the attacks, allegedly arriving hours after the assailants had fled. Some residents further claimed that their communities have been repeatedly targeted, with certain villages reportedly attacked as many as six times.

The organisation warned that Plateau State is becoming increasingly unsafe, with both rural and urban communities experiencing recurrent violence that has left residents living in persistent fear.

Citing previous data, Amnesty International noted that between December 2023 and February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed in Plateau State. Among the victims were 533 women, 263 children, and 540 men, while more than 29,000 individuals were displaced.

The group called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to curb the attacks, ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, and provide adequate compensation and support to victims and survivors.
