Amnesty International condemns killings in Benue community

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of nine people following an attack on Ankpali Edikwu ward in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to reports, gunmen invaded the community on Sunday, opening fire on residents in what witnesses described as a shooting spree. The attack is part of a disturbing pattern of violence in the area, with at least seven villages in Apa Local Government Area reportedly targeted in recent incidents.

Amnesty International noted that beyond the loss of lives, the attackers have consistently destroyed critical infrastructure, including boreholes, clinics, and schools, exacerbating the humanitarian impact on affected communities.

The organization called on Nigerian authorities to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive, concrete action to protect citizens. It stressed that safeguarding human rights and ensuring accountability for killings, abductions, and other violent crimes across the country remain essential to restoring public confidence in the government’s commitment to security.
