FRSC warns against attacks on personnel as Edo suspect arrested

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has cautioned motorists and members of the public against assaulting its operatives, reiterating the agency’s zero-tolerance policy on attacks against personnel performing lawful duties.

The warning follows the arrest of a suspect linked to the assault of an FRSC patrol team in Edo State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of April 11, 2026, when a patrol team from the Edo Sector Command flagged down a vehicle for a seat belt violation. According to the Corps, the driver fled the scene while an FRSC marshal was still engaged in enforcement, before mobilising a group of commercial tricycle operators who attacked the officers.

During the assault, the marshal was reportedly pushed into a gutter and beaten, while the team leader also sustained injuries. The suspect subsequently fled the scene.

The FRSC said the suspect was later tracked and apprehended through coordinated efforts with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services. He has since confessed to the offence and expressed remorse.

The Corps commended the swift response and professionalism of the security agencies involved in the operation.

Mohammed emphasised that assaulting law enforcement personnel constitutes a serious criminal offence and would be met with the full weight of the law. He added that while the suspect’s remorse was noted, due legal process would be followed to ensure accountability and deterrence.

He urged the public to cooperate with FRSC operatives and to utilise established channels for lodging complaints rather than resorting to violence.

The Corps further disclosed that the injured marshal is in stable condition and receiving medical care.

Reaffirming its commitment to road safety and the protection of its personnel, the FRSC said it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that all perpetrators of violence against its officers are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
