Counter Terrorism: Nigerian Army forges stronger bilateral ties with Turkish defence industries

In a bid to bolster their collective efforts against terrorism, the Nigerian Army and the Turkish Defence Industries have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen their bilateral relations.

According to Director of Army Public Relations Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, this significant development transpired today, Thursday, October 19, 2023, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar.

Ambassador Bayraktar underscored the common challenge of insecurity, particularly the global threat of terrorism, that both Nigeria and Turkiye face. He emphasized the mutual benefits that this enhanced collaboration would bring, noting that it is poised to effectively curtail terrorist activities within their respective borders. Drawing from Turkey’s extensive experience in countering terrorism, the diplomat announced that the Turkish Republic is ready to join forces with Nigeria in the fields of defense technology and economic strategies to combat terrorism and insurgency.

In his response, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, extended his appreciation for the long-standing amicable relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Turkish Defence Industries, as well as other affiliated entities. He acknowledged their successful cooperation in acquiring defense equipment and facilitating the medical evacuation of personnel to Turkey. General Lagbaja revealed that the Nigerian Army had recently received critical combat assets to enhance ongoing military operations.

General Lagbaja expressed optimism that this deepening partnership between the two nations would substantially bolster the capabilities of their respective armed forces. By sharing intelligence and operational experiences, the collaboration is poised to bring a higher level of effectiveness to their counter-terrorism efforts.

This strengthened alliance marks a pivotal step in the joint battle against terrorism, demonstrating the commitment of both the Nigerian Army and the Turkish Defence Industries to safeguarding their nations and the broader global community. As these two countries unite their efforts in confronting shared security challenges, the world watches with anticipation for the positive impact this partnership is likely to yield.
