NDLEA busts drug syndicate, seizes ammunition in nationwide operations

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded a series of significant interceptions across the country, including the discovery of illicit drugs concealed in water purifier machines imported from Europe and the seizure of military-grade ammunition during coordinated enforcement operations.

In Lagos, operatives uncovered consignments of high-potency narcotics hidden inside water purifier units shipped from the Netherlands. The intercepted substances included three kilogrammes of ketamine and 199 grammes of MDMA (Ecstasy), detected during a routine inspection at a courier facility.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the concealment method underscores the increasing sophistication of international drug trafficking networks seeking entry routes into Nigeria.

In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives arrested three suspects—Musa Sunday, Mercy Sunday, and Salomi Ezekiel—after recovering 100 jumbo bags of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 1,246 kilogrammes. The drugs were found in a residential property in the Gonin Gora area.

Separately, officers intercepted 380 rounds of 7.62mm military-grade ammunition along the Abuja–Kaduna highway near Jere. A 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa, was arrested while allegedly transporting the consignment to Katsina State. The agency confirmed that both suspect and exhibits have been transferred to relevant security authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

In Niger State, a warehouse raid in Gidan Kukah, Bosso Local Government Area, led to the recovery of 457 kilogrammes of skunk and the arrest of Godwin Zakka. In Enugu State, operatives intercepted a commercial vehicle on the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, recovering 22,000 tramadol pills, 100 ampoules of pentazocine, and 200 grammes of bromazepam. The driver, James Maigari Wisdom, was arrested.

Beyond enforcement, the agency intensified its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign, conducting sensitisation programmes in schools across Cross River, Taraba, Lagos, and Anambra States.

Commending the successes, the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Buba Marwa, praised officers across Kaduna, Niger, and Enugu Commands, as well as the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation, for their sustained commitment to disrupting drug supply chains and promoting prevention initiatives.

Marwa urged personnel to maintain momentum in the fight against drug trafficking networks, warning that such syndicates pose a growing threat to national security and public health.

The agency noted that Nigeria remains a key transit hub for illicit drugs due to its strategic location, with trafficking increasingly linked to arms smuggling, violent crime, and other security challenges.
