Amnesty International has strongly condemned the mob killing of a woman in Mararaban Jos community along the Kaduna–Zaria highway, describing the incident as a disturbing reflection of the growing wave of mob violence across Nigeria.
The rights organisation called on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations that police officers handed the victim over to the mob that later lynched her and set her body ablaze on June 21, 2026.
According to Amnesty International, eyewitnesses alleged that after a large crowd reportedly stormed a police station where the woman was being held, officers on duty brought her out and surrendered her to the mob.
The organisation said the allegations, if established, would represent a serious failure of law enforcement and a breach of the state’s responsibility to protect lives.
Amnesty International noted that the incident highlights what it described as the persistent failure of Nigerian authorities to prevent mob violence, warning that the growing trend of “jungle justice” is being fuelled by weak law enforcement and a lack of accountability.
The organisation expressed concern that mob attacks are increasingly being carried out based on suspicion, rumours or unverified allegations, with victims often denied due process and legal protection.
Describing mob violence as a major threat to the right to life, Amnesty International said the continued occurrence of such killings, coupled with the limited number of investigations and prosecutions, demonstrates a failure by authorities to uphold their obligation to protect citizens from violence.
The group further argued that the inability of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to prevent, investigate and prosecute cases of mob violence has emboldened perpetrators. It added that the problem is worsened by weaknesses within the country’s justice system, including corruption and ineffective legal institutions.
Amnesty International urged authorities to ensure a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident and to bring all those responsible to justice.
