South African Police Service explain death of Nigerian suspect

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a stern warning against “misleading” social media reports surrounding the death of a Nigerian national who collapsed and died shortly after being arrested in Sunnyside.

The incident occurred on June 28, 2026, when the SAPS Tshwane Drugs team acted on intelligence and raided an apartment, arresting the suspect for drug possession. According to authorities, the man was placed in handcuffs but collapsed while being escorted into custody.

Police officials state that medical assistance was requested immediately. However, responding paramedics declared the suspect dead at the scene.

Because the death occurred while the suspect was under police control, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)—the nation’s police watchdog—was immediately notified to ensure transparency.

An inquest docket has been opened alongside a criminal case for drug possession. Authorities confirmed that the narcotics seized during the raid have been logged into the SAPS 13 store as official evidence.

Detectives and an IPID investigator both attended the postmortem examination. Following the initial autopsy, officials decided that SAPS will head the investigation pending the final postmortem results to determine the exact cause of death.

SAPS leadership has strongly condemned online narratives attempting to link the tragedy to recent anti-illegal immigrant protests, labeling those claims entirely baseless. “These claims are an attempt to mislead the public,” SAPS said in a statement, urging social media users to refrain from spreading unverified information that could inflame community tensions.
