In a dynamic and eventful week, the air components of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) in the Northwest and Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Northeast Nigeria have executed a series of successful operations, working in conjunction with the Land Component and other security agencies to maintain the security and stability of the regions.
In an official statement, Directorate of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Edward Gabkwet, Air Commodore said On November 1, 2023, the Air Component of OPHD conducted a series of precise and successful airstrikes in Kankara Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State. These operations were aimed at dismantling the hideout of the notorious terrorist kingpin, Babaru, who has been responsible for a multitude of terrorist and banditry activities across Kankara and neighboring LGAs. Notably, Babaru was implicated in the heinous massacre of over 100 residents in Gidan Gari and Yarmai-Yadiya villages in Bakori LGA on February 2, 2023. The airstrikes resulted in the destruction of Babaru’s hideout and the neutralization of several terrorists. However, there is no confirmed report regarding the elimination of Babaru himself.
Furthermore, airstrikes were carried out in the stronghold of another terrorist kingpin known as Mai Solar in Maru LGA of Zamfara State. The operation effectively targeted and eliminated various enclaves used by the kingpin and his associates as hideouts. The precise strikes compelled survivors to flee the area, although confirmation regarding the status of Mai Solar remains pending.
On November 3, 2023, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai executed precision airstrikes, culminating in the elimination of numerous terrorists. This operation occurred at their rendezvous point near Degbawa, a secluded location within the Mandara Mountains in Goza Local Government Area of Borno State. The decision to launch airstrikes was based on intelligence reports indicating the gathering of key terrorist figures and their foot soldiers for a potential meeting. The presence of a significant number of terrorists raised substantial concerns, necessitating the execution of an air interdiction. Post-strike assessments confirmed the successful elimination of multiple terrorists.
Sources indicate that this particular location was discreetly chosen by the terrorists to avoid easy detection, especially by NAF aircraft. The outcome of the strike debunked their assumptions, leading to the success of the air operation. The sources also noted that this strike marks a considerable setback for the terrorists who have recently faced mounting pressure from the air and land components of Operation Hadin Kai.
Moreover, there are strong indications that these terrorists were responsible for the recent attack on locals in Geidam on October 31, 2023. Their meeting was presumed to review the attack and strategize for future assaults on innocent civilians and other vulnerable targets.
These successful air operations in the Northwest and Northeast regions of Nigeria signify a critical milestone in our continuous efforts to counter terrorism and insurgency, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Nigerian populace.
