Amnesty International has condemned an alleged attack on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) who gathered at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to welcome the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
The organisation expressed concern over reports that the supporters were shot at and tear-gassed, leaving several people injured during the incident.
Viral videos circulating online showed individuals identified as NDC supporters fleeing the scene amid allegations of gunfire and the use of tear gas. Some of the fleeing supporters were seen with clothes soaked in blood, while others accused security operatives of watching as the incident unfolded.
Amnesty International described the incident as troubling, warning that attacks and intimidation targeting political opposition members could undermine fundamental rights and democratic participation in Nigeria.
The organisation noted that the reported attack was part of a disturbing pattern of violence against opposition members in different parts of the country.
It warned that repeated incidents of this nature could create an atmosphere of fear, making it increasingly difficult for opposition parties and their supporters to exercise their rights to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and political participation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of political supporters at public gatherings and the responsibility of security agencies to protect citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.
Amnesty International’s condemnation underscores the need for a thorough investigation into the reported attack, the identification of those responsible and appropriate accountability measures.
The organisation’s position also highlights the importance of ensuring that political parties and their supporters can organise rallies, receive party leaders and participate in democratic activities without fear of violence or intimidation.
