Nigeria, Cyprus move to deepen economic, education ties

Nigeria and Cyprus have pledged to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on trade, investment, education and political dialogue, following the accreditation of Nigeria’s ambassador to the Mediterranean island nation.

The commitment was made in Nicosia on Friday when Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, presented her Letters of Credence to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace.

The ceremony formally marked the commencement of Ufochukwu’s diplomatic duties in Cyprus and provided an opportunity for both countries to explore new areas of cooperation.

Ufochukwu conveyed the fraternal greetings of President Bola Tinubu to Christodoulides and reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening relations between Nigeria and Cyprus throughout her tenure.

Welcoming the Nigerian envoy, Christodoulides described relations between the two countries as longstanding, anchored in shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

The Cypriot president expressed his government’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to expand bilateral engagement, identifying the economy, trade, investment, education and political dialogue as priority areas.

He further stressed the importance of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges and advancing the mutual interests of both countries.

The renewed commitment is expected to create opportunities for stronger commercial relations, educational exchanges and investment partnerships, while improving engagement between the two governments and their citizens.

For Nigeria, closer ties with Cyprus could open additional channels for trade, business collaboration and educational cooperation, while providing opportunities for Nigerian students and members of the Nigerian community on the island.

Similarly, Cyprus could benefit from expanded engagement with Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, by exploring investment opportunities and strengthening commercial partnerships across key sectors.

However, translating the diplomatic commitments into tangible benefits will require sustained engagement among government officials, business leaders, educational institutions and other stakeholders in both countries.

Senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission attended the ceremony.

Ufochukwu is expected to engage Cypriot officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as she begins efforts to advance bilateral cooperation.

Her accreditation presents a fresh opportunity for Nigeria and Cyprus to build on their longstanding friendship and pursue practical partnerships capable of delivering economic, educational and diplomatic benefits to both countries.
