US, Nigeria explore creative economy partnership as Hudspeth hosts Burna Boy

The United States and Nigeria are exploring opportunities to strengthen cooperation between their creative industries, with a focus on investment, intellectual property protection and commercial partnerships involving music studios, record labels and streaming platforms.

The initiative was discussed when the United States Consul General in Lagos, Brandon Hudspeth, welcomed Grammy-winning Nigerian music star Burna Boy to the US Consulate General in Lagos.

The meeting focused on translating the longstanding cultural ties between both countries into tangible economic opportunities for artists, entertainment businesses and other stakeholders across the creative value chain.

Discussions centred on expanding commercial relationships between American and Nigerian studios, record labels and digital streaming platforms to improve market access, stimulate investment and create new opportunities for creative professionals in both countries.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of stronger intellectual property protection to safeguard the rights of artists, ensure fair compensation for creative work and promote a more sustainable entertainment industry.

Both sides explored opportunities for artist and industry exchanges to facilitate knowledge-sharing, professional development and collaboration between creative professionals in the United States and Nigeria.

Investment in creative infrastructure was another key area of interest, reflecting the potential for improved facilities, technology and industry capacity to support the production, distribution and global commercialisation of creative content.

Nigeria’s music industry has gained substantial international recognition, with artists such as Burna Boy helping to expand the global reach of Afrobeats and strengthen the country’s cultural influence.

The engagement underscores the potential of cultural diplomacy to advance economic cooperation, build commercial networks and create new opportunities for businesses operating in the creative sectors of both countries.

By strengthening partnerships across music production, distribution, intellectual property management and creative infrastructure, the United States and Nigeria could further harness their cultural connections to support innovation, investment and job creation.
