The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations that police officers extorted a resident during a stop-and-search operation, following a video circulating on social media.
The Command said preliminary findings indicated that the incident dated back to May 19, 2025, contrary to the impression created by the online publication.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the date was established from a receipt shared alongside the video by a social media user identified as VJADEDIM.
The Command expressed concern that the publication did not clearly indicate when the alleged incident occurred, noting that the omission could create a misleading impression about the current administration.
However, it stressed that the age of the allegation would not prevent a thorough investigation to establish the facts and determine appropriate action.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations ordered by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, revealed that the officer allegedly involved had reported the loss of his official identification card before the date of the incident.
The Command said the officer’s claim, including the documentation relating to the missing identification card, was being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
It reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extortion, unprofessional conduct and other forms of misconduct by police personnel.
The Commissioner of Police has consequently directed that the allegation be thoroughly investigated, with appropriate disciplinary or other measures to follow based on the findings.
The Command also invited all persons connected with the incident to appear at the FCT Police Command Headquarters on October 26, 2026, at 11 a.m. to provide official statements and relevant information to assist the investigation.
It urged residents to report incidents of police misconduct promptly, providing accurate details of the date, time and location.
Complaints can be submitted to the Command’s Complaint Response Unit through 08107314192, the statement added.
