Police warn politicians against destruction of campaign materials

The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and hoodlums against the destruction, defacement or unlawful removal of campaign posters, banners and billboards ahead of the 2027 general elections, threatening arrest and prosecution of offenders.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu said the Force issued the warning in a statement expressing concern over growing incidents of deliberate destruction of campaign materials belonging to political parties and candidates across the country.

It condemned the acts as political intolerance and urged political thugs, hoodlums and other mischief-makers to desist immediately.

According to the police, the destruction or unlawful removal of another candidate’s campaign materials may constitute malicious damage, a criminal offence under applicable laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, which addresses the offence of mischief.

The Force stressed that political differences or allegiance to a particular party do not justify the destruction of another candidate’s property or interference with their right to campaign freely.

It reiterated that all political parties and candidates, irrespective of their affiliation or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consequently directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents, investigate reported cases and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those found culpable.

The police also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.

The Force called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of others, stressing that political intolerance, intimidation and criminal conduct must not undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

It warned that the police would not allow political thugs and troublemakers to turn the nation’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness.

“Those who choose to break the law will face the full consequences of their actions,” the statement warned.
